Mainz is part of the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany is the south east of the country and stands on one side of the river Rhine where it meets the river Main. Mainz cathedral dedicated to St Martin is considered one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture and is more than one thousand years old. It can be found in the central market square. There are two interesting towers, the Eisenturm and Holzturm, the former a thirteenth century iron tower and the latter a fourteenth century wood tower. Mainz is the birthplace of Johann Gutenberg who invented the printing press and an original Gutenberg bible can be found in the local Gutenberg museum along with other books of that period.
