Part of the Rheinland-Pfalz state in south west Germany. Ludwigshafen began life as a fortress created to protect the city of Mannheim on the other side of the Rhine river. The fortress became the city of today in 1843. Twenty years later BASF placed their factories here and turned the city into an industrial city that continues to this day with the main emphasis on the chemical industry.
