Visit the Westend to see the 19th century houses next door to
the modern business buildings and find out for yourself whether
it appeals to you.
One can start a tour at the Alte Oper on Opernplatz. So walking
the street - Oberlindau strasse, we see the monumental IG-Farben
Haus and then a row of 1880 town houses. A famous painter by the
name of Wilhelm Steinhausen lived in this row, where a private
museum is on display. Engelbert Humperdinck also lived in this
neighbourhood and now these buildings stand in the shadow of the
Hoch Haus am Park, one of Frankfurt’s many skyscrapers. The
Gruneburg Park and Palm Gardens just behind the skyscrapers, are
a great place to relax and unwind. One passes by the Synagogue
on Freiher vom Stein Strasse, which is the only surviving synagogue
in Frankfurt, and head on towards Eppsteiner Strasse to where the
protest to save the Old town started in the 70’s. See house
no.47 here.
On Kleiner Wiesenau 3 we pass the Sigmund Freud institute and
arrive at Mylius Strasse 32, which was the old home of Clara Schumann.
Crossing the Bockenheimer Landstrasse and turning left into Schumann
Strasse, we enter the composer’s quarter. The Struwwelpeter
Museum is the highlight here. Following Kettenhofweg to the Pferdestall,
a fantastic building built in 1880 here and one can look out over
Frankfurt’s skyline, and at the corner of Kubler Strasse,
we also get a fantastic view of the glass and terracotta high rises
towering over the 19th century villas.
