World War I (WWI) had no affect on Frankfurt. Not a bomb or any
buildings falling from grace. The University in Frankfurt was founded
in 1914 and also the trade fair was re-established in 1920. The
building of the Main Market Hall, the airport, the racetrack and
the Waldstadion stadium were built around this time.
In 1933 the Nazis took over the city and around the year 1941
the Jewish Community were getting deported out of the city. The
Allies heavily bombed the city during the end of the war, and all
this ended when the Americans took the city in March, 1945.
Frankfurt received a new makeover during the re-building of the
city. Over 160,000 flats were built and also tower blocks as well
as industrial complexes in the Banking district.
In the race to become Capital of West Germany, Bonn managed to
just beat Frankfurt. But Frankfurt’s growth and its bonds
with the commercial and business community did not hinder its development
and transformation into a very important financial city. Over 400
banks located here as well as the stock exchange and this turned
Frankfurt into one of the world’s most important financial
centres.
